BBC World Class

The BBC has launched a very exciting initiative to help and encourage school links across the world.  The team meets once a month to report on progress, to plan the best ways to help schools develop links and to suggest international projects they can work on

The Golden Tapestry

An arts project linking schools across the Commonwealth

The Golden Tapestry is a project for primary and special schools across the Commonwealth. Hundreds of thousands of children are contributing their own ideas and portraying their own lives and experiences in a unique collaborative artwork that is being exhibited around the world. But the Golden Tapestry is far more than that. Within the project, schools are working together with schools in other countries. Some we are introducing to each other for the first time, others are using the project to strengthen their existing links. Our aim is that all these links will endure beyond the project, providing a valuable legacy on which schools and their communities can build. Through working on the Golden Tapestry children are learning to see their lives in a global perspective, to take pride in their own communities and culture and to understand and respect others’.
HE the Rt Hon Don McKinnon, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, says “The Golden Tapestry is a project aimed at promoting the value of diversity throughout the Commonwealth. It involves Commonwealth schoolchildren and offers them an opportunity to express what it means to them to be part of the Commonwealth.”
Please visit the Virtual Golden Tapestry to see, as we receive them, photographs of the individual schools' finished tapestry canvases, often with descriptions written by the schools themselves. The Golden Tapestry page will bring you up to date on the progress of the whole project.
The Millennium Tapestry page is a record of the United Kingdom project that was the predecessor of the Golden Tapestry. You will find a link to the Virtual Millennium Tapestry, which is a unique archive of Britain at the time of the new millennium through the eyes of its children.
The Commonwealth page tells you something about this association of diverse independent countries across the world that share common goals and ideals.
We are proud to include a Sponsors page where there are links to the websites of the companies and organisations that have generously supported the Golden Tapestry.
In our News and Events page you will find details of forthcoming exhibitions and displays, as well as other events in which the Golden Tapestry is involved. There is also a link to recent events, where you can see photos and descriptions of past events.
You can download fuller information about the Golden Tapestry in the Just for Schools page, which also contains a number of useful links. The About Us page contains some details about the people who are running the project.
We have tried to make this website both informative and enjoyable. We hope it provides you with what you are looking for, and we love hearing your suggestions for improvement.  Please explore our site and send us your comments in the 'Contact us' sections you will find throughout the site.
