The tapestry was made by Year 5 and 6 children who take part
in Sewing Club.
Initially Linda Butler, the teacher acting as tapestry
coordinator, talked to the
children about their understanding of a tapestry. Then they
looked at examples in
the Thames Heritage Tapestry literature, on line and in
books. The children
decided, apart from Rainham Marshes, what other local places
of interest they
would like to include to represent our area in the Tapestry.
This was a ‘child-led’
project - Linda was there to guide, suggest and tackle the
difficult bits but the
children decided on the content and how it would look. They
drew pictures of
local landmarks and plans of how they wanted the tapestry to
look, and then the
hard work started!
It was a joint decision to include our school, Scargill in
the tapestry, and this part
has turned out particularly well. The other local landmarks
are - Rainham Clock
Tower, Upminster Windmill, St. Andrew's Church, Bretons
Manor House and
Scargill Junior School.
We are all incredibly proud of the Tapestry and can't wait
to see it mounted and
displayed - in fact we enjoyed it so much that we are
planning to make another one
for the school to keep!
Many thanks for giving Scargill the opportunity to take
part.
